Collin County Court Records
Collin County court records are documents (physical or electronic) and other materials filed and generated in the county's courts during legal proceedings. In Collin County, Texas, court records aid historical documentation, ensuring that court cases and decisions can be reviewed, appealed, or analyzed for various purposes. They also aid legal research, analysis of judicial decisions, and the maintenance and improvement of a fair legal system.
Clerks of courts are authorized by Texas law to be custodians of court records. As these records are deemed a part of Collin County Public Records, members of the public looking to view or copy court records may query the clerk of the court where a case was heard.
Are Court Records Public in Collin County?
Yes, although exceptions exist, many court records in Collin County are open to the public.
The Texas judiciary adopts an open access policy, but court records are not subject to the Texas Public Information law (Tex. Gov. Code § 552). Tex. Gov. Code § 552.0035 establishes that the state's Supreme Court is responsible for adopting rules that govern access to information or records that the judiciary collects and maintains.
Different rules of judicial administration, such as rules of civil procedure, specify records restricted from public viewing and explain how courts can seal and unseal records generated during legal cases.
What Do Collin County Court Records Contain?
Court records in Collin County typically include detailed information about a case, such as the parties involved (plaintiffs, defendants, and prosecutors), the charges or claims being brought, court dates, rulings, motions, evidence presented, and the outcome of the case (verdict or judgment). Other things, such as transcripts, settlements, plea deals, and injunctions, are also generated during court cases.

How to Conduct a Collin County Case Records Search
There are various ways to search for Collin County court records, whether an individual wants to view them, check their status, or order certified or non-certified copies.
Online Case Records Search
The Collin County government offers three different web resources for court case information. These records are generated in the county's 13 District Courts, 8 County Courts at Law, and 5 Justice of the Peace Courts.
Each resource provides varying information and record availability may be limited.
- Judicial Online Search
This application lets searchers view Magistrate, District, County, and Justice Court cases. People can go to the Online Judicial Search page, choose the kind of record they want to find (civil papers, cases, inmates, or active warrants), select a search option (attorney, citation number, case number, or name), and select which court's (Magistrate, District, County, or Justice) record they want to retrieve.
The search results are categorized if the searcher selects multiple record types. The information one obtains from the site depends on the record type.
- Case Search
The Case Search resource allows individuals to check details of court records from the Justice, County, and District Courts. Unlike the Judicial Online Search, it does not produce records from the Magistrate Court.
Users can search for different case details at once from any of the three courts and narrow their search how they see fit. They can initiate a search using the name of a case party (first name and date of birth are optional, but last or company name is required), case number, attorney, or citation number.
This system can display details from every ongoing case in the District, County Courts at Law, and Justice of the Peace Courts.
Historical civil and probate cases handled in the County Courts at Law and civil cases from the District Courts go back as far as 1984. Users can search for Justice of the Peace Case Records from 1984 to the present date. Meanwhile, criminal cases held in the County Courts at Law are available from 1988 onwards, and those held in the District Courts are available from 2000 onwards.
- Case Records Inquiry
This system allows users to search for court calendar information, as well as criminal, probate, magistrate, civil, family, and Justice of the Peace case records.
Users can only search for one case type at a time, which they must select before initiating the search. They can start the search by entering the name, business name, other agency name, or SID of a party to the case. Nonetheless, other search options like an attorney's name, the filing date, and case number are provided.
Case details available after a search include case events and court orders, charge information (for criminal cases), names of case parties, financial information, and basic case details like the date filed and court location.
The Case Records Inquiry system produces the following case records:
- Court cases that are currently ongoing in the County's Justice of the Peace, County Courts at Law, and District Courts
- Historical civil cases handled by the District Courts and civil and probate cases handled by the County Courts at Law Courts since 1984
- County Courts at Law criminal cases from 1988
- District Court criminal cases from 2000
- Justice of the Peace Court cases in Precincts 4, 3-2, 3-1, and 2 active from August 3, 2009, and cases in Precinct 1 active from May 4, 2009
Case Records Search by Mail
Individuals who want to go beyond viewing case details online can request physical or electronic copies of court documents by mail. The District Clerk (for District Court cases) and the County Clerk (for County Court at Law cases) process mail requests.
- District Clerk
Interested parties can download and fill out the District Clerk's Records Request Form and send it to the address on the form.
The following are the fees for requesting documents by mail:
- $1 for the first 10 pages for non-certified electronic copies and $0.10 per page after 10 pages
- $1 per page for physical copies
- $5 for record searches
- $5 for each certification
- $20 per CD
Typically, it takes 1 to 3 days to process requests, but individuals are advised to wait 10 days.
Requesters can use any of the above online resources to look up case information to complete the form.
- County Clerk
The County Clerk allows requesters to complete a Record Request Form online and submit it through the website. They can receive the documents by mail, pick them up, or receive them electronically (non-certified documents).
Requesters must pay the following fees, depending on the nature of their requests:
- $5 per document plus $1 per page for certified copies
- $1 for the first 10 pages and $0.10 per page after 10 pages for non-certified electronic copies
- $1 per page for physical copies
In-Person Case Records Search
Interested individuals can also walk into court locations to view and order copies of court records. The fees applicable for in-person requests are the same for mail requests.
Collin County Civil Court Case Records
Civil court case records are generated in non-criminal legal proceedings, such as small claims, injury, and estate disputes. The cases are handled in the District, County, and Justice Courts of Collin County. These records are maintained and distributed by clerks of the courts.
Collin County Criminal Court Case Records
Criminal court records are generated in legal matters involving public offenders. These cases are handled in different courts in the county. The Justice of the Peace Courts handle some traffic offenses, truancy, and bad checks. The District Courts handle mostly felony criminal cases, and the County Courts at Law Courts handle misdemeanor and some criminal cases authorized by Texas law.
Clerks of these courts are responsible for maintaining records from those legal proceedings.
