The McKinney Police Department serves as the main law enforcement agency for the city. It provides online access to a community crime map and monitors city-wide crime statistics. According to data for 2017, the city recorded a total of 2,684 reported incidents. Larceny-theft was the most common property crime with 1,965 cases while aggravated-assault was the most recurring violent crime, with 151 incidents. Compared to 2016, total crimes decreased by 17%. Property crimes decreased by 18% while violent crimes slid by 9%. The city recorded an average of 4.09 daily crimes per 100,000 residents, making it safer than 66% of the cities in the country.

The Records Division of the McKinney Police Department manages and compiles different types of police records, including accident reports and incident reports. It also processes requests for police records.

How to Obtain Police Reports

To obtain a police report, interested parties will need to submit an open records request. The Records Division processes in-person, mail and email requests. Applications can also be submitted via the department’s online open records platform. Residents of McKinney can request criminal history record checks through the Texas Department of Safety. It maintains a conviction database that contains public criminal records. Members of the public can sign up to the database and conduct searches using the subject’s full name and date of birth.

Court Records

The City of McKinney is home to multiple courts, including district courts, a county constitutional court, county court at law, justice courts and municipal court. Records of cases filed at the district court may be inspected in person using the public terminals at:

The district court also provides online access to court cases and court schedules. The case search feature can be used to find information on cases held in any of the district courts, a county court at law, and justice courts within the county. It also includes records of criminal cases filed from 1988 to present and civil cases held at the county courts at law court or district court from 1984 till present.

Members of the public can conduct searches by the defendant’s name, attorney name, or case number. In addition to cases, the tool can be used to search for active warrants and constable civil papers.

How to Obtain Birth/Death Records’

Copies of birth and death records can be obtained by contacting the Collin County Clerk’s Office. The office processes walk-in and mail applications. Interested parties will be required to submit a completed application form for birth records or death records, listing the full name of the individual on record, the individual’s date of birth, and the requester’s relationship to the registrant among other information.

Requests for certified copies of birth and death certificates must be signed by a notary public. Birth records are only issued to qualified applicants, namely the individual on record or direct family members, such as a parent, sibling spouse, adult child or grandparent. Requests must also be accompanied by a valid government-issued I.D such as the driver’s license or U.S passport.

The clerk office charges $23.00 per copy for birth records. Death records cost $21 for the first record and $4 for each additional copy made in the same order. Payments should be made to the Collin County Clerk. Records take a week to process for mail applications while walk-in requests are processed the same day. Requests should be directed at:
