Cameron County Crime Numbers

The Texas Department of Public Safety (TxDPS) provides annual reports of crime statistics for Cameron County as well as other counties in the state. Its latest report is for 2017. In that year, there were 8 murders, 225 rapes, 191 robberies, and 895 assaults in Cameron County. Incidences of property crimes include 1,788 burglaries, 8,975 larcenies, and 350 motor vehicle thefts.

Compared to 2013 crime figures for the county, murder (33.3%), rape (78.6%), and assault (42.1%) rates rose in 2017. The five-year crime trend for Adams County also indicates lower rates of robbery (21.1%), burglary (34.7%), larceny (22%), and motor vehicle theft (28.9%).

Cameron County Criminal Records

Criminal background checks for Cameron County are available from the TxDPS. This agency provides public access to the state's Computerized Criminal History (CCH) System. To conduct a background check and obtain a criminal history report, visit the TXDPS CRS Public Site to search through the CCH Database. Users must register to use the site and then purchase credits to conduct searches.

Residents of Cameron County can also request criminal history checks through their local police departments. For example, in Brownsville (county seat), citizens can authorize the Police Department to perform background checks on their behalf by submitting the appropriate applications and fees. Start by completing the Record Check form. Send this along with a color photocopy of a valid ID, a notarized letter authorizing the Police Department to run your criminal history check, and a check for $7 to:

Cameron County Police Reports

Local police departments also provide incident and accident reports for the various cities and towns in Cameron County. To request for police report for the City of Brownsville, complete the public information request webform on the website of the Brownsville Police Department. Cameron County Sex Offender Information

The TxDPS maintains records of all registered sex offenders living in the state and provides public access to this information. Search the Texas Sex Offender Registry to find registered sex offenders and predators living in Cameron County. You can find these individuals by name and street address. The tool also allows users to search for known sex offenders working or studying in institutions of higher learning in Cameron county.

The County Clerk charges $21 for each certified copy of a marriage license and accepts cash, check, money order, and credit/debit card for in-person requests. Only money order and checks are accepted for mail requests.

The County Clerk also accepts walk-in requests for certified copies of birth and death records. Visit the office address above with a completed Inhouse Birth Certificate Application or Inhouse Application for Death Certificate. Attach a photocopy of a state driver's license or a similar valid photo ID.

To make your request by mail, complete the Mail Application for Birth and Death Record. Include a copy of a valid photo ID and a check or money order for copy fee made payable to Cameron County Clerk, Sylvia Garza-Perez. Send your mail application to:
