The Texas Department of Public Safety (TxDPS) provides crime statistics for all the counties in the state including Hidalgo. Crime reports for 2018 show that Hidalgo County recorded 38 murders, 411 rapes, 361 robberies, 1,696 assaults, 3,228 burglaries, 17,500 larcenies, and 779 auto thefts. Compared to the 2013 crime figures, murder (72.7%), rape (108.6%, mostly due to the expanded definition of the crime in the intervening years), and assault (2.3%) rates rose in Hidalgo County. The five-year crime trend for the county also indicates falling robbery (23%), burglary (49.7%), larceny (21.3%), and auto theft (50.1%) rates.

Only selected vital records are considered public records in Texas, according to state laws.
