Crime Numbers

The Texas Department of Public Safety (TxDPS) provides crime statistics for all the counties in the state including Hidalgo. Its most recent crime reports show that Hidalgo County recorded 38 murders, 411 rapes, 361 robberies, 1,696 assaults, 3,228 burglaries, 17,500 larcenies, and 779 auto thefts in 2018. Compared to the 2013 crime figures, murder (72.7%), rape (108.6%, most due to the expanded definition of the crime in the intervening years), and assault (2.3%) rates rose in Hidalgo County. The five-year crime trend for the county also indicates falling robbery (23%), burglary (49.7%), larceny (21.3%), and auto theft (50.1%) rates.

Criminal Records

The TxDPS also provides criminal history records for Hidalgo County. It offers name-based criminal history search on its website. Visit the TxDPS’ Criminal History Name Search webpage to use this service. Users must first register with the website and then log in using their accounts to access criminal history records.

The Sheriff’s Office is open to the public from Monday to Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Police reports for the City of Edinburg, the county seat, are available from the Records Department of the Edinburg Police Department. Visit the Records Department anytime between Monday and Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The Edinburg Police Department charges $6 for each accident report and $1 per CD or $3 per DVD for electronic records. Texas laws empower the TxDPS to maintain a central database of all registered sex offenders living, working, and attending school in the state. To find registered offenders in Hidalgo County, search the Texas Sex Offender Registry by offender name, street address, or name of higher institution.

The Hidalgo County District Clerk’s Office provides copies of the records of courts located in the Hidalgo County courthouse. Citizens can request uncertified copies by fax, email, and mail. Certified copies are only available by mail. To initiate a request, submit a completed Copy Request Form and send it to districtclerk@co.hidalgo.tx.us or fax it to (956) 318-2251. Only credit cards are accepted for copy fees for fax and mail requests. Credit card payment attracts an additional convenience fee.
