The latest crime data for Denton County indicate that there were five murders, 95 rapes, 73 robberies, 176 assaults, 543 burglaries, 2,313 larcenies, 169 auto thefts, and one case of arson in 2016. Compared to the previous year, these figures showed that murder (150%), rape (5.5%), robbery (17.7%), assault (23.9%), burglary (34.4%), and arson (100%) rates increased. The county recorded lower incidences of larceny (9.3%) and auto theft (11%).

In accordance with the provisions of the Texas Public Information Act, Denton County allows all citizens access to arrest records and outstanding warrants. The Denton County Sheriff's Office maintains a list of all sex offenders living outside the various municipalities in the county. It makes this information available to the public on its website. Sex offenders living within municipalities in Denton County have to register with the local police departments in their cities. These offices open between Monday and Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The County Clerk also accepts mail requests for copies of birth, death, and marriage certificates. When requesting for a birth or death certificate, download and complete the birth/death certificate application form. It is also available in Spanish. For marriage certificate copies, complete the Marriage Record Copy Request Form and send it to the same address. The County Clerk charges $1 for non-certified copies of marriage records plus an additional $1 per page of record requested. The fees for certified copies of marriage records are $16 plus $1 per page. Include a cashier's check or money order for the fees in the mail request. The County Clerk charges $23 for each certified copy of a birth certificate. The first copy of a death certificate attracts a charge of $21. There is a $4 fee for each additional copy of the same death record. Accepted payment methods include cash, checks, and money order.
